Campervan Emergency Kit
Whether you're preparing for your next road trip or the next season, it's a good idea to take inventory of the items in your campervan emergency kit. This will help you avoid breakdowns and road side rescues when minor mishaps pop up.
Our first tip for all campervan owners and renters is to familiarize yourself with the vehicle and all the gizmos and gadgets that make it go. If you purchase or rent from us, we do a thorough walkthrough of all the features of your Moxie Van on pick up day to ensure you know how to use everything before rolling away. We want new van owners to have knowledge and understanding of the unique aspects of their specific campervan model and the confidence to troubleshoot any minor malfunctions while they’re out on the road. There may be specific tools you need for some of these simple adjustments or repairs.
Climate and weather play a big factor in what you might face and need in your emergency kit. Different seasons cause different stressors on your campervan and being aware of these things is important for avoiding breakdowns and mishaps.
As we transition to the cooler temperatures and wetter conditions of fall and winter, now is the best time to make sure your campervan is equipped with an emergency kit and other basic essentials. Here’s what we recommend keeping on hand for when things go awry.

-
Cell phone and charger: A smartphone can do a whole lot more than call 911 in an emergency, but this basic function may be the difference between life an death.
-
Hazard Sign/Indicators: This may seem antiquated, but if you loose power in your vehicle, you can’t use the flashers, so it’s important to have something bright and reflective on hand to place on or outside of the campervan to let others know you’re stopped and addressing an issue.
-
Spare Tire: Whether it’s mounted on the rear ladder or under the van, make sure you know how to remove the spare and have practiced/knowledge on how to change a flat tire.
-
Lug Nut Wrench: Essential for loosening and tightening the lug nuts on your wheels.
-
Jack: Lift part of your van, allowing access to change a tire or perform light repairs.
-
Jumper Cables/Jump Pack: Portable jump starters allow you to jump a camper van yourself if needed.
-
Ice scrapper/Brush: After a cold night in the van, this will come in handy.
-
Spare Headlight Bulbs: Make sure your path ahead is always well light, especially if you’re camping in less managed and maintained areas.
-
Fuses: An added protection, just in case one blows while on your trip.
-
Fire Extinguisher: This is important to have on hand in case of fire.
-
Wrench Set & Screwdriver: Perform minor repairs on your van with these essentials.
-
Engine Oil: A quart size bottle stashed away in the van Cebefore you head off on your trip—just in case!
-
Coolant: Coolant levels can vary, especially with older vans—It’s always nice to have this on hand.
-
Tire Chains: Great to have as the snow starts to fall. If you’re headed over a mountain pass you may even be required to have these.
-
Battery: Older batteries are particularly susceptible to those first real cold, frosty nights.
-
Traction Mats: If you ever find yourself stuck in mud or a precarious situation, these mats will often do the trick.
-
Shovel: Sometimes you just might have to dig yourself out of a sh*** situation.
